Verdict

Our Verdict on Rider University's Certificate

Four courses, 12 credits and as little as two semesters: Rider University's certificate is a compact way for you to add forensic skills to an accounting background. You can take it all online, blended or in on-campus evening classes. And the same courses count toward Rider's Master of Accountancy if you decide to keep going.

Rider University's Forensic Accounting Graduate Certificate is a 12-credit program from the Norm Brodsky College of Business in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. It's built to teach you how to identify, collect and examine evidence of accounting fraud and abuse.

The school says you'll be able to manage and reduce risk, work on cases of embezzlement or illegally obtained funds, and advise on financial transactions from mergers and acquisitions to bankruptcy proceedings when you graduate.

Credentials

Accreditation and Certification Rule Changes

Rider is one of only two schools in New Jersey with dual accreditation in accounting and business from AACSB. The accounting department says its program holds that accreditation, a distinction earned by only 2 percent of accounting programs worldwide.

Rider notes that forensic accounting has grown tremendously over four decades as federal legislation and stronger auditing standards made fraud detection, prevention and prosecution a priority. Career opportunities in forensic investigation include positions in government, public accounting, insurance, law, business and the nonprofit sector.

You'll have a dedicated academic advisor, and you can join professional groups including Beta Alpha Psi and a student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants.

Curriculum

What You Will Study

Three of the four courses are forensic accounting classes. Fraud and Forensic Accounting is the broad one. It gives you background in fraudulent financial reporting and fraud detection, money laundering and transnational flows, courtroom procedures and litigation support, and cybercrime. You'll learn it through case analysis, videos and role playing.

Fraud Detection and Deterrence turns to prevention. You'll cover audit responsibility and reporting, professional judgment, quality control and writing effective policies that prevent and detect economic crimes. And you'll apply fraud examination techniques to a variety of settings.

Business Valuations: Fundamentals, Techniques and Theory covers basic, intermediate and some advanced valuation methods. You'll focus on valuing a closely held business that has no market price.

The fourth course is data. In Business Intelligence Tech-Data Mining, you apply data mining to payroll, procurement and expense report fraud. Cell phone and credit card fraud, credit and bankruptcy analysis, and customer relationship management are also covered. Business Analytics Fundamentals 1 is the alternative in that slot.

By the end, the learning outcomes include gathering and delivering evidence for litigation. You'll also understand how internal control systems minimize or mitigate the potential for fraud.
