A master's in fraud examination trains you to spot red flags, interview witnesses and document a scheme so it holds up in court. Programs use titles like fraud examination, financial fraud and financial forensics, and many connect to the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential.
Several also count toward Certified Public Accountant (CPA) requirements, and some sit in business schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

What Counts Toward the CFE
Fraud examination programs and the CFE share a vocabulary, so it helps to know how the ACFE decides who qualifies. It works on points: 40 to sit the exam and 50 to be certified. You also need ACFE Associate Membership and two years of professional work related to detecting or deterring fraud.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited school supplies the education points, so a master's isn't a gate. It's a way to deepen your skills. Still, the exam is demanding. It has three timed sections on fraud schemes and financial crimes, investigations and legal issues, and prevention and deterrence.
Once your eligibility is active, you've got a 60-day window to finish all of them. With an exam that demanding, a fraud-focused master's earns its keep. You spend a year or two working through the same material with instructors who use it in practice.
Look Inside the Fraud Courses
Course lists tell you more than program names do. West Virginia's curriculum grew out of work the university did for the National Institute of Justice, and you can choose a Cybersecurity, Data Analytics or Management emphasis.
Saint Xavier's three fraud courses cover identity theft and cyber fraud, fraud examination, and forensic and investigative accounting. They're taught by faculty who are CPAs, CFEs and licensed attorneys.
Carlow's ten core courses reach from white-collar crime and money laundering to cybercrime. An optional Cyber Threat Research and Analytics track adds two courses with a capstone at the National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance in Pittsburgh.
Seton Hill's four fraud courses follow the full cycle of schemes, legal setting, investigation and prevention. The same four also stand alone as a 12-credit certificate. Florida Institute of Technology's master's, designated in science, technology, engineering and math, adds data mining electives for spotting financial trends.
Choose a Wrapper That Fits Your Career
Fraud skills come inside different degrees, and the wrapper shapes where you can go. A Master of Business Administration, as at Saint Xavier, Seton Hill, Tiffin and Pfeiffer, adds management and finance. If you already hold or plan another graduate degree, the Colorado State University Global specialization adds four criminal-justice-flavored fraud courses, including one on data analysis with Benford's Law and bank-record work.
A Master of Accountancy, such as York College of Pennsylvania's, keeps you on a path toward the CPA. York's version also readies you for the CFE and the Certified Forensic Accountant credential. The Colorado State University Global Master of Professional Accountancy with a fraud emphasis offers three forensic courses and a start every month.
If you're set on investigation, a Master of Science, like West Virginia's or Carlow's, stays focused on it from the first course.
