Your CFE certification cost starts with the $480 exam application, then ACFE membership dues, then whatever you spend to study. The ACFE’s own prep packages start at $899.20 for members, so the exam fee plus the entry package comes to $1,379.20 before dues. Keeping the credential adds yearly dues and continuing education.
What Does the CFE Exam Itself Cost?
The number to remember is $480. The ACFE’s FAQ says that application fee covers processing and your first attempt at each required section. If you pass everything the first time, it’s the only exam charge you’ll see. Everything else in this table only applies if plans change.
| Fee | Amount | What it covers | Paid to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam application | $480 | Processing plus your first attempt at each section | ACFE |
| Retake | $110 per failed section | Each additional attempt at a section | ACFE |
| Application extension | $150 | One extra year on your two-year application window, available once | ACFE |
| Reschedule 30 or more days ahead | $30 | Moving an appointment | Prometric |
| Reschedule 5 to 29 days ahead | $50 | Moving an appointment | Prometric |
| Cancel within 5 days or miss it | $55 | A late cancellation or no-show | ACFE |
| Application not approved | Refund minus $100 | If the ACFE finds you don’t qualify | ACFE keeps $100 |
Sources: the ACFE’s CFE FAQ for the application, extension and refund, and the ACFE’s exam FAQ for retakes and appointment changes.
Your application is valid for two years from the day the ACFE receives it. The extension buys one more year if you haven’t finished all three sections. Passing scores stay valid while the application is open, so a miss on one section doesn’t cost you the others.
What Do ACFE Membership Dues Cost?
You can’t take the exam until you’re an associate member, so dues come before anything else. The ACFE sets them by country, and its dues calculator gives you your exact number. The ACFE also says dues are subject to change, so run the calculator on the day you join.
A few things make dues easier to plan for:
- You can pay dues two years at a time by noting it on your invoice, according to the ACFE’s membership FAQ.
- Members save an average of 20 percent on products and training events, which matters when you buy prep.
- Associate members can attend free quarterly webinars that earn CPE credit.
Students pay far less. The ACFE’s page for partner schools lists Student Membership at $25 a year and a free Fraud Examiners Manual. You qualify if you’re enrolled in at least nine semester hours as an undergraduate or six as a graduate student, and you get 12 months of membership whenever you apply. The ACFE’s student membership page adds that choosing digital delivery lowers your dues further.
How Much Does CFE Exam Prep Cost?
Prep is where your total can swing the most. The ACFE offers three study routes, and the Prep Course packages and the Review Course are the two with price tags.
What Do the Prep Course Packages Cost?
The ACFE’s Prep Course packages are one-year subscriptions. Every package includes the CFE Exam Prep Course, which the ACFE describes as more than 500 lessons, nearly 1,400 study questions and nearly 800 flashcards.
| Package | Member price | Non-member price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | $899.20 | $1,124 | Prep Course, online Fraud Examiners Manual, PDF manual |
| Gold | $1,149.60 | $1,437 | Everything in Silver plus the CFE Exam Study Guide (PDF) |
| Platinum | $1,699.20 | $2,124 | Everything in Gold plus the On-Demand Review Course, workbook and slides |
You have to be a member to sit the exam, so the member column is the one that applies to most candidates. These prices come from the ACFE’s Prep Course Subscription Packages page.
One candidate on r/CFE bought the Platinum Package as an active member and said the member discounts “helped offset” the exam fee. They called the prep materials comprehensive and reported passing every section with a 93 average.
What Does the Review Course Cost?
The Review Course is three days, instructor-led, with each day built around one exam section. The ACFE calls it a supplement to the Prep Course, so plan to study first. Both prices below include the exam fee.
| Format | Package A | Package B |
|---|---|---|
| In person | $2,745 | $2,145 |
| Virtual | $2,285 | $1,685 |
Package A is for people who haven’t bought a Prep Course in the last two years. Package B is for people who have. In-person Package A costs $600 more than Package B. Check the course page for exactly what each package includes before you register.
The Review Course carries 23 CPE credits, and attendees get 50 percent off retake fees, with limitations. Two cancellation rules are worth knowing before you register:
- Cancelling or transferring less than 30 days before the start costs $300 or $100. In person, a cancellation within one week of the start costs $500.
- Virtual attendees get a workbook in the mail. If you cancel and keep it, the ACFE charges $249.
Where Can You Spend Less on Prep?
Several routes cost less than a full package. Which one fits depends on your situation.
The Fraud Examiners Manual is the source of everything tested. New student members get a free download, and CFEs get free online access once certified.
The 90-Day CFE Exam Challenge is free to ACFE members. You get a monthly study plan, weekly check-ins and a private forum, and the Challenge is built around the Prep Course.
The student package costs $449 and includes the Silver Package course plus one year of membership after you pass. You need an active student membership, and you must be an undergraduate senior or a graduate student.
The ACFE’s page for partner schools lists a different student package price than the student package page itself. Go with the student package page, and confirm with Member Services before you buy.
What Do Retakes and Schedule Changes Cost?
Nobody plans on a retake, but it helps to know the math. One retake adds $110, so you’d pay $590 in all. Four retakes of the same section would add $440. The fourth and fifth attempts come with a 30-day wait, so budget time as well as money.
Review Course attendees get half off retake fees, and your score report shows which content areas need work, so you can aim a retake at your weak spots. Scheduling about 30 days out, as the ACFE suggests, keeps you clear of the $30 and $50 reschedule fees.
What Does It Cost to Keep the CFE Credential?
After you pass, the ACFE’s CFE FAQ says you maintain the credential by paying membership dues and earning 20 CPE credits each year. At least 10 of those must relate directly to fraud detection and deterrence, and 2 to ethics.
Two perks soften that. CFEs get free access to the online Fraud Examiners Manual and savings on ACFE training, and the free quarterly members-only webinars earn CPE.
Where you buy your hours is up to you. One commenter on r/CFE, who also holds an accounting license, called the ACFE’s own CPE expensive and said they found all their fraud-specific hours elsewhere for $199 a year. The ACFE publishes the types of CPE it accepts, so check them before you buy anywhere.
If your membership lapses, getting back in costs more.
| Membership expired for | What you need |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 years | 20 CPE credits, a recertification application and fees |
| 3 to 5 years | 40 CPE credits, an application and fees, or pass the exam again |
| 5 or more years | Reapply and pass the exam again |
Those rules come from the ACFE’s recertification page. Staying current is cheaper than catching up.
Who Pays Less for the CFE?
Some groups get real discounts, and the ACFE spells most of them out. Employers vary, so ask yours.
| Who you are | What the ACFE offers |
|---|---|
| Student | Student Membership at $25 a year, a free Fraud Examiners Manual, the $449 student package and scholarships |
| Scholarship applicant | The ACFE Foundation’s Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship, with awards from $1,000 to $10,000, for students in accounting, finance, business administration, criminal justice and related fields |
| Educator | More than 40 percent off the Educator Certification Package, 20 percent off in-person events and 50 percent off most training |
| Any member | An average of 20 percent off products and training events |
Employers are the wild card. A CFE posting on r/CFE said a previous employer originally paid for the credential, while their current employer doesn’t reimburse it. The ACFE doesn’t set employer rules, so ask your manager or HR before you pay out of pocket.
Your school may help in less direct ways. The ACFE’s Anti-Fraud Education Partnership has nearly 300 participating colleges and universities, and joining costs a school nothing. Four programs we track belong to it, and 28 sit on our CFE exam prep list. Ask your program whether it’s a partner and whether it has an ACFE student chapter.
How Does CFE Certification Cost Compare With a Degree?
If you’re earning a degree anyway, the CFE is a small line in a bigger budget. The credential doesn’t require a forensic degree, either. A bachelor’s in any field earns the 40 points you need to sit the exam. Still, plenty of people pair a forensic program with the exam, so the degree side of the ledger matters too.
Across the 65 programs we track, the median total tuition for a graduate certificate is $12,180. For a master’s it’s $23,250, and for a bachelor’s it’s $52,126. The median cost per credit runs $895 for certificates, $775 for master’s and $458 for bachelor’s programs.
A few programs connect to the CFE this way:
| Program | What it lists | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Seton Hill University’s online graduate certificate | 12 credits at $1,015 each, $12,180 total | A short route into fraud examination coursework |
| Carlow University’s online master’s in fraud and forensics | 30 credits at $800 each, $24,000 total | The school says it prepares you to sit for the exam |
| Fort Hays State University’s online bachelor’s in financial forensics and fraud investigation | $275.65 per credit, $33,078 across 120 credits | An ACFE student chapter open to online learners |
| Southern New Hampshire University’s online bachelor’s in accounting | $354 per credit | A four-course forensic accounting and fraud examination concentration |
| Purdue University Global’s online bachelor’s | $371 per quarter credit | The school says its forensic accountancy courses may help support CFE preparation |

What Might Your Total CFE Certification Cost Be?
Most candidates will weigh a handful of combinations. Every sum uses only the ACFE’s listed prices, and none includes membership dues, which depend on your country.
| Route | Sum | Total before dues |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee only | $480 | $480 |
| Exam fee plus one retake | $480 + $110 | $590 |
| Exam fee plus Silver Package | $899.20 + $480 | $1,379.20 |
| Exam fee plus Gold Package | $1,149.60 + $480 | $1,629.60 |
| Exam fee plus Platinum Package | $1,699.20 + $480 | $2,179.20 |
Add your dues from the calculator and a year of upkeep, and you have your budget. Is it worth it? That depends on the jobs you’re targeting, and our CFE salary page shows what holders report earning.
