Curriculum
What You Will Study
The certificate is four required courses, 12 credits in all, and each one targets a different part of a forensic engagement.
Advanced Forensic Accounting Foundations gives a broad conceptual overview of forensic accounting, the internal controls that deter and detect fraud, and corporate governance laws. Financial Statement Analysis in Forensics examines how firms communicate through financial statements, and you learn to interpret statements, analyze cash flows and judge the quality of earnings, assets and liabilities.
Fraud Detection and Investigative Accounting Methods is where you'll do the casework. Sessions are interactive, with students working through actual cases, developing investigative strategies and working to prove how the fraud was committed. The course reviews sophisticated fraud schemes and how fraudulent conduct can be deterred, and it covers the recovery of assets, methods of writing effective reports, and anti-terrorist and money-laundering regulations including the Patriot Act.
Forensic Accounting in Litigation covers the litigation process and the civil and criminal statutes used to prosecute white-collar crimes. You'll learn tools to quantify damages from fraud, breach of contract or insurance disputes, work through business valuations, including in divorce cases, and see how to review an opposing expert's damages report.
That course walks you through the support work a litigation team counts on: gathering the documents that support or refute a claim, helping with examination for discovery, drafting questions about the financial evidence, assisting with settlement talks and helping at trial with testimony or cross-examination.
