CFE Certification Salary in 2027: What Certified Fraud Examiners Report Earning

Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certification salary in 2027: what holders report, federal pay for the closest job, and why salary sites disagree.

CFE certification salary figures depend on who’s counting. The ACFE’s 2024 member survey reports $101,000 for CFEs with a four-year degree and a $112,000 median with a graduate degree. Federal data for financial examiners, the closest match, shows a $94,160 median. Job sites land anywhere from $98k to $147,203. Knowing what each number measures lets you plan with the right one.

What Is the Average CFE Certification Salary?

There isn’t one number, so a figure quoted without a source tells you little. Five figures come up most often, and each measures something different.

ACFE 2024 Compensation GuideCFEs with a graduate degree, median compensation$112,000

PayscaleAverage base salary, people reporting the CFE, 1,050 responses$98k
ZipRecruiterEstimated average annual pay from job postings and third-party data$147,203

Start with the ACFE numbers, since they come from people who hold the credential. Then use the BLS figure as a check from outside the field. Treat the two job-site numbers as estimates.

The ACFE’s $101,000 is worded as reported earnings, and only the $112,000 is labeled a median. Put them next to the federal median and you get a gap of $6,840 for the four-year group and $17,840 for the graduate group. But these are different measures: a worldwide member survey of total compensation against wages in one occupation. Compare them with care.

What Did the ACFE’s 2024 Salary Survey Find?

The Compensation Guide for Anti-Fraud Professionals is the main source for what CFEs earn. It rests on the 2024 Global Salary Survey of CFEs and associate members. A third-party research company, Western Management Group, collected the answers confidentially.

The survey went to about 90,000 members in April 2024 and drew 4,449 usable responses, a 5 percent response rate. The ACFE gives a margin of error of 1.47 percent at a 95 percent confidence level.

Four findings matter for your pay.

  • The premium. CFEs earn 32 percent more than their non-certified colleagues, according to the ACFE.
  • The trend. The ACFE says that premium grew substantially since its 2013/2014 guide.
  • The degree. The $101,000 and $112,000 figures above split CFEs by education. The ACFE’s blog adds that advanced degrees and continuing education can raise earning potential.
  • The gap between women and men. Median pay among respondents was $102,000 for women and $108,000 for men. Women made up 41.6 percent of responses, and the ACFE says the gap shrank substantially from the 2013/2014 guide.

Respondents also reported extra pay, benefits and professional opportunities after they earned the credential.

Keep one limit in mind. The full tables, by region, industry and experience, are for members, though non-members can request the guide. Everything public here comes from headline figures, so we’ve stuck to those.

The ACFE’s salary calculator is a predictive model built from the survey totals. It asks for industry, job function and level of responsibility. The ACFE adds that a gap between your pay and the guide isn’t necessarily good or bad. Employers differ by location, size and benefits.

What Does the BLS Say About Financial Examiners?

The BLS doesn’t publish a line for CFEs. Financial examiners are the closest match, and it’s worth being clear about why that’s imperfect. Financial examiners make sure institutions handling money follow the law, and most work in finance and insurance, the federal government or state governments. Plenty of CFEs do different work. Still, it’s the best federal yardstick for fraud examination pay.

What Does the BLS Say About Financial Examiners?
MeasureFinancial examiners, May 2025
Lowest 10 percent earned under$56,230
25th percentile$70,660
Median$94,160
75th percentile$129,600
Highest 10 percent earned over$174,200

The BLS defines the median as the midpoint: half the workers earned more and half earned less. The BLS counted 70,000 jobs in 2025. It projects 9 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 4,500 openings a year. If you’re heading this way, you’ll typically need a bachelor’s degree with some accounting coursework.

Where you work moves the number a lot. The state table below shows financial examiner pay across states, from $57,590 in Arkansas to $198,720 in the District of Columbia. For a deeper look at employers, federal pay grades and related titles, see our fraud examiner salary guide.

Why Do Job Sites Disagree About CFE Pay?

Because they count different things. You’ll see two numbers a lot, and they’re far apart.

ZipRecruiter estimates $147,203 a year as of October 2026. It says its figures come from employer job postings and third-party data. It also shows a narrow band, with most salaries between $144,500 and $150,000. A postings-based estimate describes what’s advertised, not necessarily what people in the field earn.

Payscale lists a $98k average base salary for people who report holding the credential. The sample is 1,050 people, updated May 17, 2026. Because it’s self-reported and tied to the certification, not to one job title, it mixes people in very different roles.

Payscale’s mix of respondents matters too. Its respondents lean toward people who’ve been working a while: only 1.9 percent are entry level, while 32.2 percent are in the experienced bracket. So if you’re just starting out, you shouldn’t expect to open at that average.

Payscale also publishes averages by employer.

EY (Ernst & Young)$114,470
Wells Fargo Bank$108,000
Tennessee Valley Authority$59,344
State Employees Credit Union, North Carolina$55,673

That’s a spread from $55,673 to $204,499 among people with the same credential. Treat single-employer figures as examples of the range, not as offers you can expect.

What Should You Plan Around if You’re Early in Your Career?

Use the low end, not the middle. The BLS reports that one in ten financial examiners earned under $56,230. The 25th percentile was $70,660. Those are safer planning numbers for your first jobs than any survey median, because the survey medians describe people who’ve had years to build experience.

The credential itself asks you to build that experience. You need two years of fraud-related work before you’re certified, and you can sit the exam before then if you’ve reached 40 points. So your first raise may come from the experience, and your second from what the credential lets you apply for.

Talk to your own employer’s compliance or audit leaders too. Ask which credentials they value, and whether they pay for exam fees or study materials. You’ll learn more from that conversation than from any single salary site.

Does the CFE Certification Raise Your Pay at the Job You Have?

Not automatically. The ACFE’s 32 percent premium compares CFEs with non-certified colleagues. It isn’t a promise that your next paycheck rises by that amount. The people in an r/CFE thread on before-and-after pay describe a mix.

A CFE holder posting there put it this way: “Most people aren’t getting a sizable salary bump at their current role just for getting the license.” They went on to say what the credential does: “open doors for jobs you previously weren’t qualified for, due to not having the required CFE.” Their tip was to set up a job alert for “CFE” once you’re certified.

A financial crimes professional posting in the same thread listed “Before 78k After 120k.” A banker wrote about “No change in salary based solely on certification, but one time $500 bonus I believe.”

Those are three stories, not a statistic. But they match the pattern you’d expect. The credential tends to matter most when a role asks for it, and changing roles is often where the pay moves.

What Jobs Can You Get With the CFE Certification?

The ACFE counts fraud work across accounting and auditing, compliance, corporate security, investigation, prevention, legal support and detection. Job titles vary by employer, so read the duties, not just the name. The ACFE’s compliance career page lists the CFE among professional certifications for compliance officers.

If you’re not sure which title fits, start with the duties you want to spend your days on and work backward. A role that involves tracing assets and interviewing witnesses is a different job from one that monitors transactions all day, even when both count toward your experience.

Each has its own pay picture. Our forensic accountant salary guide, fraud analyst salary guide and compliance officer salary guide cover them with their own federal data.

What Does the Credential Cost Next to the Pay?

You can budget the credential in advance, and that helps you judge the return. The ACFE’s application fee is $480 and covers your first attempt at each of three sections. The Silver exam prep package costs $899.20 for standard members. Seniors and graduate students with an active student membership can take the student package for $449.

After that, you’ll pay dues and earn 20 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits a year to keep the credential, according to the ACFE FAQ. Our CFE exam cost guide totals every line, and our main CFE certification guide walks through the points and exam.

How Can You Raise Your Pay With the Credential?

You can’t control the market, but you can control a few things.

Pair the credential with a graduate degree. The ACFE’s graduate-degree figure is its highest public number. Programs built around fraud examination teach the material the exam covers, so you can study for both at once. West Virginia University’s online Master of Science in Forensic and Fraud Examination is 30 credits and stands out for capstone simulations that include pitching a case to real IRS criminal investigators.

To compare more options, see the master’s in fraud examination programs ranking.

Pick a program that fits your budget. Southern New Hampshire University’s online bachelor’s in accounting with a forensic accounting concentration costs $354 a credit across 120 credits and includes digital forensics tools. Purdue University Global’s online bachelor’s in accounting and analytics has a forensic accountancy concentration, with courses such as Fraud and Forensic Accounting, and military tuition reductions. Our CFE exam prep ranking shows more options, including fully online ones.

Look for roles that ask for the credential. Since the credential tends to pay off when a role requires it, search for postings that name the CFE and build your two years of fraud-related experience in the meantime. Certification waits until you’ve logged them.

Check where you live. Pay for the closest federal occupation differs by thousands of dollars between states, so your location can matter as much as your credential.

If you’re weighing the CFE against a license, our guide to the CFE and the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential shows how the two compare.

Financial Examiners Pay by State
